Join parent

Joint parent function will let you join an existing parent/carer to the 'focus students' family. It is typically used after a marriage, reconciliation or data entry error.

The function will let you select a parent/carer to 'join' the family for the student you enquired upon. By default the system will assume you wish to join the 'other' parent to the family. You can however search the entire state database to find any parent/carer and join them.

Should the parent/carer you are joining to the main family be part of another family then the system will auto 'split' that other family for you. You will need to tell the system if any children will be coming with the parent who is joining the main family.

Below are two examples of joining families. The first is an example of reconciling the other parent with the main family, the second is the more complex joining a parent/carer from an existing family with children to the main family.

Example one: Reconciliation

We are looking at the Simpsons family and here we see the family from the perspective of Maggie Simpson. We see that Maggie and her sister Lisa live with their mother. Their father, Homer, is seperated and is the 'Other Parent'. Homer has a son (Maggies Brother) living with him.

After clicking the join parent button we simply leave the screen as is. The system has assumed (correctly) that we intend to re-unite Homer with Marge.

Here we see the family back together.

Example two: A more complex join

In this example we see single Father Ned Flanders who has two sons Tod (who we enquired on) and Rod.

We are going to 'Join' Ned Flanders with 'Marge Simpson' Marge is Currently married to Homer Simpson and has 3 children Maggie, Bart and Lisa. When we join Marge to Ned we are also going to bring all 3 children with her (to live with her and Ned in the 'Main Family'). The system will auto split Marge from her Family and in this case make Homer (her previous partner the 'other parent' to her children. To do this we find Marge by searching for her after pressing the join parent button.

We then select Marge after checking this is the correct parent.

Once selected we confirm that we would like to move Marge into the Flanders Family and that all three children will now be residing with her and Ned.

Now we see the full family from Student Tod Flanders perspective. The family is now quite big (as there are 5 children and one other parent). Marge is now part of the Flanders family. You may note her relationship to Tod is shown as Unknown/Not Provided. You can change this to 'Step Mother' (for example) simply by clicking on it or on Marge and setting the relationship
