Transcript of Speech recognition

This is the transcript of the "Speech recognition" video.

Speaker 1:

Speech to text is technology that enables human speech to be converted automatically into text. You might also have heard of the terms dictation, voice to text, or voice typing. Within the NSW Department of ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø, we have access to many forms of dictation tools on most of the devices and a lot of the software that we use. All you need is a built-in microphone within your device or an external microphone plugged in. Voice typing could be essential for some individuals. For people who are blind, have low vision, a physical disability, or have dyslexia, voice typing may be the only way to overcome barriers to be able to print text. Voice typing is an excellent way for students to show their understanding. It can improve engagement and contribute to self-confidence and wellbeing for some students as well. Teachers, please use your judgement on which occasions you think students could use this tool or whether it would be time for them to practise their handwriting or typing.

As a general rule, users need to be able to speak clearly and slowly for this to have the best effect. This will need to be taught explicitly to your students so they can have the most successful experience. For the tools to work effectively, students will need to be willing to test out the technology, be able to focus on thoughts and generate ideas, hold information in their short-term memory, structure oral language, produce adequate articulation, and decode and read the words that they type in order to review and edit. It is also important that you have access to wifi and that you minimise as much background sound as possible. Personal headphones with building microphones can help with this. Now that you understand what voice to text is, have a look at the other videos in this series and watch any of the how-to guides for the devices, software, and apps that you and your students commonly use. For more guides on available accessibility tools, make sure you have a look at our other videos in this series on the T4L website.
