Safety on public transport

Never too old to be safe

Public transport is a great way to safely get to and from school. Being aware and following safety advice helps keep everyone safe.

General tips

  • Plan ahead and allow enough time for your journey to avoid rushing.
  • Stay alert and don't be distracted by your mobile phone.
  • Follow the and be courteous and respectful to the driver and passengers.

When travelling by bus

  • Stand well away from the kerb when waiting.
  • Tap on and off with your Opal card.
  • If the bus has seatbelts, always buckle up.
  • Place your school bag on your lap, under the seat in front of you or between your feet if standing.
  • Wait until the bus has gone, then use a safe place to cross.

When travelling by metro, train or light rail

  • Stand back from the track, behind the yellow line and wait until the train has come to a complete stop.
  • Stand back to allow passengers to get off the metro, train or light rail before you get on.
  • Mind the gap when getting on and off the metro, train or light rail
  • Tap on and off with your Opal card.
  • Once on board, either take a seat or hold onto the handrail.
  • Place school bag on your lap, under the seat in front of you or between your feet if standing.
  • Offer your seat to someone who needs it more than you.
  • Wait until the light rail vehicle has moved away and cross the tracks at a safe place.

When travelling by ferry

  • Wait a safe distance away from the water's edge.
  • Follow instructions given by the ferry crew.
  • Allow passengers to get off the ferry before you get on.
  • Be careful as you walk over the gangway, hold onto the handrail and watch your footing.
  • Take a seat if one is available or hold onto a handrail.
  • Place school bag on your lap, under the seat in front of you or between your feet if standing.
  • When waiting to get off the ferry, stand behind the yellow area and follow instructions from the crew.
