Walking to school safely

Never to old to be safe

Walking to school can be a great way for you to stay physically active, build independence and have fun with friends. By staying alert and making safe choices, you help protect yourself and others.

Staying safe while walking

  • Plan the safest walking route to and from school. Avoid areas with heavy traffic.
  • Always walk on the footpath or nature strip. If there’s no footpath or nature strip, walk facing oncoming traffic and stay as far from the road edge as you can.
  • Be aware of moving vehicles near driveways and carparks.

Staying safe while crossing the road

  • Unplug headphones and put your phone away to avoid being distracted.
  • Use the safest place to cross the road – even if this means walking further to a pedestrian crossing.
  • Remember to Stop! Look! Listen! Think! every time you cross the road.
  • Make eye contact with the driver before you cross, so you know they have seen you.
  • When safe, promptly walk across the road, continually scanning and listening for oncoming traffic.
  • Never start crossing when the red ‘Don’t Walk’ signal is showing.
  • Never cross between parked cars, or at the front or back of a bus as it is difficult for drivers to see you.
If walking with friends, stay together, minimise distractions, remain alert to traffic and support one another to make safe choices.
